A meeting between representatives of the local branch of Kazhydromet, the Almaty Air Initiative Foundation, and the Almaty Development Center took place at the Almaty City Development Center. Participants discussed air quality monitoring, the development of environmental measurement infrastructure, and potential areas of cooperation.
The Almaty Air Initiative Foundation presented its current projects, including the development of an air quality dashboard, the use of aerodynamic sensors to track allergens, the certification of approximately 170 sensors, and joint research with international experts. The foundation also implements educational projects on environmental topics, including documentaries and a Kazakh-language series.
The local branch of Kazhydromet presented plans to expand the monitoring system in Almaty. According to specialists, the city needs at least four new stations. The possibility of increasing the number of stations in the Almaty region to ten was also discussed. Currently, only one station, in Talgar, operates in the region.
The Almaty City Development Center emphasized the need for systematic interagency collaboration, improved data quality, and the adaptation of international experience to the city's conditions. It was also noted that environmental monitoring should become not only a monitoring tool but also the basis for making specific decisions.
During the meeting, issues of updating emission calculation methods, improving the accuracy of monitoring, and engaging businesses in environmental initiatives were discussed separately.
