Demonstration of 5G capabilities for smart city held in Almaty

20.06.2019

Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan Askar Zhumagaliyev visited with a working trip to Almaty. The main purpose of the visit was to visit the digitalization facilities of the urban infrastructure and aerospace industry, as well as to participate in the demonstration of the capabilities of the 5G generation network.

Together with the mayor of Almaty, Bauyrzhan Baybek, Askar Zhumagaliyev familiarized himself with the technical possibilities of using fifth-generation networks in the implementation of the smart city project. Organizers demonstrated the capabilities of the technology in the areas of mobile and fixed wireless broadband.

«The prospects for the introduction of fifth-generation technology open up new opportunities that are important for the creation of smart cities. When they are used, the speed and quality of the connection will be improved, which are of fundamental importance, for example, in the implementation of traffic management systems, weather tracking and many other elements of Smart City. I am convinced that the development of 5G technology in our country will speed up the implementation of the Digital Kazakhstan program,» said Askar Zhumagaliyev.

During the testing, a prototype of a device capable of operating in ultra-high frequency ranges was presented. The peak data loading capacity achieved during the presentation was up to 15 Gb/s per device. Such parameters will allow the development of new user applications, as well as the introduction of industrial scenarios for the use of innovative technologies.

Digital solutions should not only make Kazakhstanis’ lives more comfortable, but also help to better approach urban infrastructure development and reduce budgetary costs. This was already discussed during the Minister's visit to the Situation Center for The City of Almaty. Information coming here from digital mapping services, including the criminal situation in the city's areas, traffic accidents, reflects data on 53,000 objects in the city and has already served as a basis for adjusting the plans for the development of Almaty.

Also, as part of his working visit, the Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry visited the Kokterek Space Communications Center, located in the Almaty region, where he familiarized himself with the functioning of antenna systems, spacecraft control hall, command and measurement complex.

It should be noted that the Center is a back-up system for the management of communications and broadcasting spacecraft «KazSat» in addition, to expand the range of telecommunications services provided, here created the first Kazakhstan teleport system, which provides interaction between satellite and ground communication networks.

The city of Almaty is a Metropolis where electronic ticketing systems in public transport, video monitoring of road safety, and a «smart» city parking system have been implemented. Comprehensive transport reform of the city was recognized as the best project at the European Forum of Smart Cities in 2018, including thanks to digital solutions.

The Digitalization Office has been established in Almaty, and the Smart Almaty concept has been developed in collaboration with Almaty and international consultants, which has already implemented more than 40 digital projects. Thus, in the UN ranking on the quality of urban services, Almaty became the only city in Central Asia and was ranked 20th in the world, where Almaty was ranked 25th. Almaty is also included in the ratings of international agencies IDC and IECE Cities in Motion Index (118 out of 165, ahead of Naples, Ankara, Jerusalem, Athens, St. Petersburg, Rio de Janeiro, Baku).

The introduction of 5G mobile networks is a global trend, with preparations under way in a number of countries to launch fifth-generation communications networks. Global equipment manufacturers are competing for leadership in the development and implementation of 5G technology.

The new generation of mobile communications assumes internet speeds of up to 1-2 Gbp/s with less battery consumption, low signal delays and comparable to the optic stability of the connection.

The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan is analyzing the employment ranges of frequencies for 5G and aligning frequencies with government agencies, as well as measures to release radio frequency spectrum sites and redistribute introduced and planned electronic vehicles to other frequency ranges. At the moment, the necessary frequency ranges have been selected for the test pilot zone of the 5G network in the cities of Nur-Sultan, Almaty, Shymkent. 5G mobile networks will allow for high data transfer rates and can be used in virtual reality technologies, remote equipment management, Smart city systems.
