The Kurultai is an ancient political institution of the Great Steppe where major decisions shaping the future of the country and its people were made. For centuries, it served as a forum where representatives of society gathered to discuss matters of national importance and reach collective decisions.

Sultans, biys, batyrs and clan leaders took part in the Kurultai, addressing issues of war and peace, land and territorial integrity, foreign policy, governance and national unity. In this sense, the Kurultai became one of the historical institutions built around the principles of collective discussion and shared responsibility for the country’s future.

The role of the Kurultai today

Today, the Kurultai takes on a new role as the country’s legislative body. It will consist of 145 deputies elected through party lists.

The deputies will represent citizens’ interests and participate in decisions that influence the country’s social, economic and political development.

The Kurultai’s key responsibilities include considering and adopting laws, approving the national budget and overseeing its implementation, as well as hearing reports from members of the Government.

Decisions made by the legislative body affect a wide range of areas — from the economy and entrepreneurship to education, healthcare, social protection, infrastructure, the environment and other issues that directly influence people’s quality of life.

23 August — Kurultai Election

The Kurultai election will take place on 23 August.

Elections provide citizens with an opportunity to participate in shaping the country’s future direction. When making a choice, it is important to look beyond party names and carefully consider their programmes, priorities and specific proposals.

Compare the parties’ positions on the economy and social policy, education and healthcare, employment, support for entrepreneurship, housing, environmental issues and regional development.

Consider what changes each party proposes, how it plans to implement its initiatives and how closely its programme reflects the issues that matter to you.

Explore the parties’ programmes, compare their proposals and make an informed choice that reflects your interests and your vision for the country’s future.
