The Raimbek Batyr Mausoleum Memorial Complex is a site of national importance and is included in the Map of Sacred Places of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Raimbek Batyr was an outstanding military leader of the 18th century, a symbol of national unity and the struggle for independence. The complex is traditionally a place of pilgrimage and a significant socio-cultural attraction. The site is currently undergoing reconstruction.
Construction and installation work began in May 2025, with completion and commissioning scheduled for May 2026. The project involves not only the restoration of the existing mausoleum, but also the comprehensive development of the territory with the expansion of the facility's functional purpose.
The reconstruction project includes the construction of additional buildings and structures, including museum and exhibition spaces, facilities for pilgrims and visitors, administrative and auxiliary facilities, as well as the improvement of the surrounding area. A separate part of the project is the conversion of the complex into a museum. According to the design solutions, a modern museum is planned to be created on the territory of the complex using VR and AR technologies, allowing the historical context of the era and the legacy of Raiymbek Batyr to be presented in an interactive format.
The project envisages the construction of a two-storey museum building: on the first floor there will be multimedia and digital exhibitions, and on the second floor there will be a historical and educational hall dedicated to the batyr tradition and history of the Kazakh people. The museum part is scheduled to be completed in the final stage of the reconstruction in 2026. The aim of the project is to preserve the historical and cultural heritage, create a modern memorial and educational space, and form a new sustainable cultural and tourist attraction in the city of Almaty. The project focuses on integrating the sacred site into the modern urban environment, making it more accessible to visitors and engaging young people through modern digital formats.
During the visit, the CRA monitoring team assessed the current status of construction and installation works, compliance with approved schedules, the quality of work performed, and the organisation of the construction site. Particular attention was paid to the compliance of design solutions with the status of the site as a sacred and historical monument. The inspection revealed a number of issues requiring additional attention and enhanced control, including the timing of the work and the coordination of the activities of the contractors.
The implementation of the project to reconstruct the Raimbek Batyr Mausoleum memorial complex has a significant socio-economic and tourist impact on the city of Almaty. The creation of a modern memorial and museum space using digital technologies will increase tourist and pilgrim traffic, form a new cultural attraction and contribute to the development of related urban infrastructure.
Based on the results of the CRA's monitoring, further support for the project and interaction with the responsible contractors is planned in order to ensure the timely and high-quality implementation of the project.
