On 25 January 2026, a large-scale environmental event organised by the Recycle Birge movement (Greenup.kz public foundation) took place at the Baluan Sholak Sports and Cultural Complex with the support of Almaty City Development Centre JSC. The eco-event was attended by about 1,800 city residents, representatives of partner organisations and the media.
The event was the culmination and continuation of systematic work to develop an environmental culture and conscious consumption in Almaty. The support of the initiative by Almaty City Development Centre JSC is aimed at forming sustainable urban practices and involving citizens in solving the pressing environmental problems of the metropolis.
The initiative was implemented with the participation of relevant city services in the field of security and the IT community and is in line with the strategic guidelines set out by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for building a clean, safe, strong, fair and advanced Kazakhstan.
Results of the eco-action
During the event, 4,212 kg of recyclable materials were collected for recycling, including:
• 800 kg of cardboard and waste paper;
• 790 kg of plastic (1, 2, 4, 5, 6);
• 2,060 kg of colourless and coloured glass;
• aluminium, tin cans, electronic waste, batteries, expired medicines, foam plastic and rags.
In addition, participants handed over light bulbs, car tyres, egg cartons, glass jars and almost 300 kg of bakery products for recycling and disposal.
Special attention was paid to the social component: 1.5 tonnes of items were collected for charity and reuse as part of the campaign.
Urban community and sustainable practices
The support of the Recycle Birge environmental movement by Almaty City Development Centre JSC is part of a comprehensive effort to develop sustainable urban initiatives and foster environmentally responsible behaviour among the population.
In 2025, the movement held nine major environmental campaigns in Almaty and regularly participated in city and national programmes, including the Taza Kazakhstan initiative. In addition to collecting recyclable materials, the Recycle Birge team organises eco-Saturdays and themed plant and book swaps, forming an active environmental community in the city.
The event at the Baluan Sholak Sports and Entertainment Complex became a platform for open dialogue on ecology, a meeting point for concerned citizens, and confirmation that sustainable change begins with simple but regular actions.
